How to Get to Mongolia

There are several ways to reach Mongolia, each offering a unique travel experience:

By Air:

Mongolia’s primary international gateway is Chinggis Khan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar, the capital. The airport is about 20 km from the city center, with plans for a new airport located 50 km away set to be completed by 2020.

Major International Airlines:

Flights to Ulaanbaatar may be pricier during the high summer season, but booking in advance can often yield significant discounts.

The Trans-Mongolian Railway connects Ulaanbaatar with Moscow and Beijing, providing a scenic route through Mongolia.

By Land:

You can cross the border into Mongolia by road:

  • From China: The Zamiin-Uud border post or Taikhesken, which is closer to Western Mongolia.
  • From Russia: You can travel by bus from Ulaan-Uud or drive across at the Tashanta border in the northwest, or Ulaan Baishint on the Mongolian side.

Mongolia’s domestic airlines frequently experience delays and schedule changes. Ensure that your international and domestic flights do not coincide to avoid potential issues.
